ABOUT AND HISTORY

The Alma bridge and the flame

Place de l'Alma, the flame, reproduction of the flame over the Statue of Liberty in New York, remains notorious as a symbol for the tragic death of Princess of Wales, Lady Diana and Dodi Al'Fayed in a car accident under the bridge it overhangs.

It was offered in 1987 by the American newspaper "International Herald Tribune", whose drafting is in Paris, in order to celebrate its centenary and to maintain the Franco-American friendship.
It was inaugurated on May 10, 1989.

Constructed by Gariel between 1854 and 1856 for the Universal Exhibition of 1855 it was inaugurated the 2 april 1856 by Napoleon and called Alma in memory of the first Crimée victory.

Four statues of soldiers leaning on pillars represented the most highly merited regiments of the Crimean army. Every statue weighed 70 tonnes, each measuring 6 meters in height. Zouave, a pomegranate tree of Diebolt, a hunter and artillery soldier by Arnaud The Zouave was in upstream left bank and served flood ladders to Parisians.

Banks of the river Seine

From the Louvre to the Eiffel Tower, from the Place de la Concorde to the Grand and Petit Palais, the evolution of Paris and its history can be seen from the River Seine. The Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Sainte Chapelle are architectural masterpieces while Haussmann's wide squares and boulevards influenced late 19th- and 20th-century town planning the world over.
